The striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) as a host of fleas (Siphonaptera) and tapeworms (Cestoda) in suburban environment of Lublin (eastern Poland)

Abstract: The striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, is one of the most abundant species among small rodents in Poland. It occurs commonly across the whole country inhabiting diverse ecological niches as meadows, farmlands, enclaves of natural habitats in cities. Wide range of ecological tolerance of this species makes it often the host, reservoir and vector of many pathogens: viruses, bacteria, protozoa, helminths and arthropods. The aim of the present study was to carry out a qualitative and quantitative analysis of … Show more

“…We observed higher numbers of A. agrarius males infested by fleas, in comparison with female individuals. A similar relationship was observed in our previous studies from Lublin [ 37 ]. One of the hypotheses elucidating this phenomenon indicates the role of the larger home range of males, which penetrate larger areas; thus, they are exposed to greater risk of attacks by ectoparasites [ 38 ].…”

“…In the study area, we detected the presence of four species of fleas ( Table 1 ). The most abundant species was C. agyrtes , which together with N. fasciatus is collected most frequently from small mammal species in various parts of Poland [ 21 ] and Lublin region [ 37 ]. C. agyrtes is also one of the most widely distributed flea species in Central Europe [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…In the analysed urban habitat, the host spectrum limitations also affect D. reticulatus larvae and nymphs. Studies on the share of rodent species in this area indicate that 87.8% of captured animals were Apodemus agrarius, whereas Microtus arvalis and Myodes glareolus, which are the preferred hosts of juvenile ornate cow ticks, account for only 7.7% [34,38].…”
