The Structure and Content of Long-Term and Short-Term Mate Preferences

Abstract: This study addresses two limitations in the mate preferences literature. First, research all-too-often relies on single-item assessments of mate preferences precluding more advanced statistical techniques like factor analysis. Second, when factor analysis could be done, it exclusively has done for long-term mate preferences, at the exclusion of short-term mate preferences. In this study (N = 401), we subjected 20 items designed to measure short-and long-term mate preferences to both principle components (n = 2… Show more

“…Stated differently, the ideal height of women's and men's avatars was consistent with heteronormative mate preferences for height in which the boyfriend/husband is taller than the girlfriend/wife (Buunk et al, 2019;Courtiol et al, 2010;Griffiths, 2017;Jonason et al, 2013;Kurzban & Weeden, 2005;Pawlowski, 2003;Pierce, 1996;Salska et al, 2008;Skrinda et al, 2014;Sorokowski et al, 2015;Stephen & Perera, 2014;Taduran, 2021;Valentova et al, 2014;Wood & Carden, 2014;Yancey & Emerson, 2014). It is also consistent with the species-level norm that men are taller than women (on average) in every human population (Eveleth, 1975;Mark, 2014;Wall-Scheffler, 2012).…”

“…Both attractiveness and desire for commitment should yield sex differences in the evaluation of potential mates. The preference for an attractive mate exists across cultures (Buss et al, 1990; Kamble et al, 2014; Souza et al, 2016), and it is especially prevalent among men in terms of short-term, sexual relationships (Jonason, Webster, & Gesselman, 2013; Li & Kenrick, 2006). There is less direct research on commitment, but across cultures men are more motivated to have multiple sexual partners and are more likely to pursue short-term sexual relationships (Buss & Schmitt, 1993; Schmitt, 2003).…”

“…More masculine women have more sexual partners, and a less restricted sociosexual orientation, than do less masculine women (Ostovich and Sabini, 2004). Differences exist in mate preferences for short-term and longterm relationships with physical attractiveness more important, and social status less important, in the short-term (Jonason, Webster, and Gesselman, 2013). It is possible that if swearing is viewed as a more masculine trait that is then linked to sociosexuality, that this may act as a marker for men that women who swear are more likely to engage in short-term relationships which would lead to higher attractiveness ratings.…”
