The Structure and Stability of the Mg-HZSM-5/Al2O3 Catalyst for Synthesis of Olefins from DME: The Influence of Thermal and Hydrothermal Treatment

Abstract: The studies were focused on changes in the structure, texture and acid properties of the Mg-HZSM-5/Al2O3catalyst upon its treatment at different temperatures (400 and 500 °С) and times (6 and 12 h). Physicochemical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence analysis, XPS, solid-state27Al NMR, nitrogen adsorption, DRIFT spectroscopy, ammonia TPD were used for sample characterization. The catalytic activitites of the initial and treated samples were studied regarding conversion of dimethyl ether (DME) to lower olefin… Show more

“…The test batch of the Mg-HZSM-5/Al 2 O 3 catalyst that was prepared at JSC “EIOR” (Russia) was used in this study. The catalyst was hydrothermally treated at a temperature of 500 °C for 6 h. The catalyst preparation, pretreatment procedures, and the physicochemical properties of this catalyst were described in detail elsewhere …”

“…The catalyst was hydrothermally treated at a temperature of 500 °C for 6 h. The catalyst preparation, pretreatment procedures, and the physicochemical properties of this catalyst were described in detail elsewhere. 38 The catalyst in a bed was diluted with quartz particles in a volume ratio catalyst: quartz = 1:2 (the particle size of the quartz was the same as that of the catalyst particle, 2.8 x (5−7) mm). Before experiments, the catalyst was activated in a flow of nitrogen at a temperature of 400 °C for 2 h to remove physically adsorbed water from the zeolite surface.…”

“…The GHSV was varied in the range of 2500-25,000 h −1 . For these conditions (d p , GHSV), the influence of external and internal diffusion was not observed [38]. The experimental results for the stable-state catalysts that observed after 1 h of time on the stream are presented in Figure S2.…”

“…In this paper, we present the original kinetic data for olefin synthesis from DME over ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with low SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 that is stable at time on stream and contains zirconium and magnesium. The stabilization of catalysts was achieved using hydrothermal treatment [7,26,38] as it is the simplest and the most industrially available method of zeolite dealumination in comparison with acids, solvents, and alkalis treatment [39][40][41]. In this case, the conversion of DME is kept constant for a long time.…”
