The structure of foaming BOF-converter slag

Abstract: The structure of foaming synthetic BOF-converter slags was studied by freezing the foam and using ocular examination. The foams were generated by CO gas formed due to the reaction between FeO in the slag and carbon in the hot metal. The character of the foams varied a lot with slag composition. Slag with lower viscosity resulted in foams with small gas bubbles, while slag having high viscosity resulted in very big bubbles.

“…The different slag compositions led to different viscosities. [132] An induction furnace was used, in which a graphite crucible filled with a CaO-SiO 2 -MgO-FeO slag and 7 g of pig iron containing 3.9 wt% C was heated. The slag and iron were melted already after %4 min, at which point the foaming started by the reduction of FeO.…”

“…During the decarburization process, a large quantity of carbon monoxide (CO) gas released from the slag-metal reaction (Equation ( 1)) would inevitably induce the slag foaming in a BOF. Foamed slag occurs most of the time, [3] which is important in BOF steelmaking.…”
