This review outlines our present experimental knowledge and theoretical understanding of deepinelastic scattering on nuclear targets. The emphasis is primarily on nuclear coherence phenomena, such as shadowing, where the key physics issue is the exploration of hadronic and quark-gluon fluctuations of a high-energy virtual photon and their passage through the nuclear medium. New developments in polarized deep-inelastic scattering on nuclei are also discussed, and more conventional binding and Fermi motion effects are summarized. The report closes with a brief outlook on vector meson electroproduction, nuclear shadowing at very large Q 2 and the physics of high parton densities in QCD.

Coherence effects in diffractive electroproduction of mesons from nuclei

A systematic multiple scattering formalism for vector meson electroproduction from nuclei is developed, with emphasis on the formation, propagation and hadronization scales for quark-gluon fluctuations of the virtual high-energy photon. The theory is compared to HERMES measurements of ρ electroproduction on 14 N. The nuclear transparency as a function of the vector meson propagation length is well reproduced.

Abstract.We describe the CASTOR detector designed to probe the very forward, baryon-rich rapidity region in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. We present a phenomenological model describing the formation of a QGP fireball in high baryochemical potential environment, and its subsequent decay into baryons and possibly strangelets. The model explains the Centauro events observed in cosmic rays and the long-penetrating component frequently accompanying them, and makes predictions for the LHC. Simulations of Centauro-type events by means of our Monte-Carlo event generator CNGEN were done. To study the response of the apparatus to new effects, different exotic species (DCC clusters, Centauros, strangelets and so-called mixed events produced by baryons and strangelets being the remnants of the Centauro fireball explosion) were passed through the deep calorimeter. The energy deposition pattern in the calorimeter appears to be a new clear signature of the QGP state.
