The structure of self‐reported problem behaviors in Chinese children

Abstract: This study examined the structure of self-reported problem behaviors in Mainland Chinese children. Third grade (n ϭ 3011) and fifth grade (n ϭ 3708) students completed a 20-item Problem Behavior Frequency Checklist (PBFC). Findings suggested that among the four factors studied (physical aggression, substance use, delinquency, and self-centered behaviors), self-centered behaviors and physical aggression were reported most frequently by the Chinese elementary school children. Furthermore, boys had higher prevale… Show more

“…This pattern of results suggests a possible separation between the more commonly studied problem behaviors and antisocial problem behaviors (aggression and delinquency). Other studies also have found separate but correlated factors for delinquency and/or aggression (e.g., Bui et al, 2000; Cooper et al, 2003; Garnefski & Diekstra, 1997; Gillmore et al, 1991; Grube & Morgan, 1990; Mason & Windle, 2002; McGee & Newcombe, 1992; Newcombe & McGee, 1989; Tildesley et al, 1995; Williams & Ayers, 1996; Xin, Zhou, Bray, & Kehle, 2003; Zhang et al, 2002). However, given the substantial intercorrelations among these three factors, results also support the possibility of a global factor accounting for the associations among the three latent factors.…”

“…The corresponding figures were 27% in the Hong Kong sample and 63% in the Zhejiang rural sample. According to studies on only children in China (e.g., Wu & Xu, 2014), although parents may pay close attention to their children, the children tend to act independently (Wang, Oakland, & Liu, 1992;Xin, Zhou, Bray, & Kehle, 2003) and parents generally try not to intervene. Communication between parents and an only child has often been found to be ineffective (Hao & Wang, 2009).…”

“…In other words, three out of ten primary school students had been bullied in Hong Kong, which was a much higher percentage than 28.8% in the US (Wong & Yau, 2002). Additionally, Xin, Zhou, Bray and Kehle (2003) have analyzed self-reported problem behaviors among children from mainland China. Self-centered behaviors and physical aggression were reported most frequently by these children during the elementary school years.…”
