Previous studies emphasized that there is a close connection between speech and thinking. The paper analyses the peripheral semantics of the German language's active vocabulary units to define how they represent the features of the national, linguistic picture of the world, namely, the mental traits of the German ethnos. Semantic methods and the extrapolation methods of typical secondary values on non-nonmental characteristics are used mainly; the comparative method was partially used. The contextual method was used as an auxiliary method for illustrating common ethical, aesthetic, and pragmatic guidelines (presuppositions) and stereotypes. The paper carried out: a) semantic analysis of peripheral lexical-semantic variants of arbitrarily and expediently selected notional parts of speech; b) comparison of peripheral semantics of similar words of German and Russian languages against the background of the Russian language; c) clarification of ethnoculturological connotation of individual Germanisms found in the Russian language. The article proves that peripheral semantics in its lexico-semantic, semasiological, and lexicographical understanding expresses key symptom complexes of German mentality, which can be expressed by concepts order, accuracy, family, wealth, quality, practicism and etc. It is found that the German linguistic picture of the world in comparison with the Russian one the material is marked by the minimalism of estimated values, practical orientation and is alluded to bookish style. <p>Celem badania było określenie, jak rozwija się pojęcie zawiści w różnych pokoleniach. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone na polskiej grupie złożonej z 247 uczestników (157 kobiet, 90 mężczyzn) należących do pokoleń X, Y i Z. Założono, że pojęcie zawiści różni się w tych generacjach. Zastosowano zadanie emocjonalnej fluencji werbalnej. Słowa podane przez badanych przeanalizowano pod kątem klastrów semantycznych, ogólnej liczby słów nawiązujących do pojęcia zawiści oraz walencji zawiści. Wieloczynnikowa analiza wariancji pokazała, że więcej słów odnoszących się do innych osób podawali badani z pokolenia Z. W pokoleniu X nie pojawił się klaster „pozytywnej manifestacji”. Przeprowadzono analizę czynnikową w celu określenia struktury pojęcia zawiści w każdym pokoleniu. Wyniki wskazują, że w pokoleniach Z oraz Y pojęcie zawiści zawiera zawiść złośliwą i niezłośliwą. W pokoleniu X pojęcie zawiści odzwierciedla jedynie złośliwą zawiść. Wyniki poddano dyskusji w odniesieniu do ogólnej charakterystyki pokoleń oraz specyfiki pokolenia X w Polsce.</p>

Given the fact that natural language analysis can distinguish constituents of mental constructs, the present research was designed to investigate the structure of concepts related to the broad spectrum of emotions comprising worry, fear, anxiety, and panic, which in this article is referred to as the 'fear spectrum'. A new technique presented here is based on a word association task and enables a description of the structure of emotion concepts. The technique is a variant of a verbal fluency task, i.e. emotional verbal fluency technique. Two studies have been conducted: the first to examine the cognitive structure of concepts within the fear spectrum (n = 280, 150 women, 130 men) and the second to confirm the stability of word association in the fear tasks and differentiation of the fear concepts in relation to trait anxiety and dogmatism (n = 190, 100 women, 90 men). A hierarchical clustering analysis, based on the linguistic material, i.e. words produced by the participants for the task of anxiety, was performed to present in what way the emotional verbal fluency technique can be applied to explore the structure of emotional concepts. According to our results, there is a relatively constant tendency in producing semantic clusters (emotional word association) among lay people. Moreover, produced clusters allow to describe the structure and to differentiate lay-concepts within the fear spectrum, such as worry, fear, anxiety, panic [respectively in Polish: obawa, lęk, strach, panika].
