“…The extracts of Calendula officinalis contain phenolic acids, sterols, carotenoids, sugars, flavonoids, triterpenic alcohols, b-sitosterol glucoside, stigmasterol glucoside, isofucosterol glucoside, taraxsterol, -taraxsterol and their esters, calenduloside A, B, E, F, G and H. Calenduloside B showed antiulcer, antiinflammatory and neurotropic activities (Rastogi and Mehrotra, 1991). It was confirmed in additional studies that these extracts contain compounds with antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (Gora et al, 1980;Kasprzyk and Wojciechowski, 1967;Kasprzyk and Pyrek, 1968;Wojciechowski et al, 1972;Swiatek and Gora, 1978;Dumenil et al, 1980). Russian investigators found that sterile preparations of Calendula extracts alleviated the signs of chronic conjunctivitis and other ocular inflammatory conditions in rats; the extracts also had a systemic antiinflammatory effect (Olin, 1992).…”
