The study of plaques of psoriasis using a scanning laser-Doppler velocimeter

Abstract: A scanning laser-Doppler velocimeter, able to measure blood flux over a large area without contact with the skin surface, was used for the objective measurement of the vascular changes in psoriasis. Individual plaques were scanned, and tracings of the visible plaque edge taken on to a cellulose-acetate sheet from which area measurements were made using a digitizing tablet. Mean blood flux within plaques was increased fourfold compared with mean background flux. There was a highly significant linear correlation… Show more

“…LDF has been used to assess blood flow for intact microvascular systems such as the skin, the retina, gut mesentery, renal cortex and mucous membranes [5,6]. Dental applications include LDF readings (LDFRs) of periodontal ligament [7], pulpal blood vessels [8][9][10][11][12], gingival or sulcular blood flow in health and disease [13][14][15][16][17][18], evaluation of the degree in healing and revascularization of surgical wounds [19], the effect of orthodontic treatment [20] or the injection of vasoconstrictive anaesthetics on blood flow [21].…”

“…These changes facilitate inflammatory cell migration and the nutrition of hyperplastic lesional skin [8,9,12,13]. Initial microvascular changes precede any psoriatic manifestation on the skin surface and occur before hyperplasia of the epidermis can be histologically detected [14,15,16,17]. The clearance of a psoriatic lesion during therapy is accompanied by a normalization of the microvascular changes, depending on the modality of therapy [8,9,18,19].…”

“…integrate for a longer time), which increases N. However, increasing N will decrease the frame rate (FR). The relationship between the frame rate FR, the number of FFT points N, the sampling rate of the ADC f ADC , and number of sampled pixels in one sampling round M is given in equation (5).…”

“…One application of this effect is laser Doppler blood flowmetry (LDBF) for measuring micro-vascular blood flow in tissue [1]. This application is a non-invasive technique that can be applied in medicine [2][3][4][5][6].…”
