The sub-genus Stegomyia (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Ethiopian region (Part II). Distribution of species confined to the East and South African sub-regions

Abstract: SUB-GENUS STEGOMYIA (DIPTERA CULICIDAE) IN THE ETHIOPIAN REGION. II. DISTRIBUTION OF SPECIES CONFINED TO THE EAST AND SOUTH AFRICAN SUB-REGION By P. F. MATTINGLY CONTENTS information concerning the species treated in the first paper and with the rainfall of the Bor-Pibor-Torit area. The distribution of certain Palearctic Stegomyia is discussed in relation to the problem of the origins of the Ethiopian fauna and an account is given of a specimen of Aedes cretinus.

“…Distribution of these species relative to climate in peninsular Florida is consistent with qualitative patterns of distribution of these species relative to climate elsewhere in their ranges (e.g., Mattingly 1958;Fontenille and Rodhain 1989). Our data relating long-term average climate to distribution and abundance of A. aegypti are strikingly incongruent with Moore's (1985) analysis of local abundance of A. aegypti relative to recent weather.…”

“…The present study includes taxonomic information (see Appendix 1) concerning known life stages of St. bromeliae Theobald, St. simpsoni and St. woodi. The works of Mattingly (1952Mattingly ( , 1953 provide taxonomic information and distribution data for most species and that of Muspratt (1956) provides this information for species occurring in southern Africa. Subgenus Stegomyia of genus Stegomyia is herein restricted to the species included in the Aegypti Group of Huang (2004).…”

“…The species of mosquito that transmit the dengue virus -all Aedes species belonging to the subgenus Stegomyia -have been recorded in several areas of Africa (Lewis, 1943;McClelland and Weitz, 1963;Fontenille and Toto, 2001) and Mattingly (1953) listed 14 Stegomyia species for Kenya alone. In the coastal district of Malindi, just one species, Ae.…”
