The submerged footprint of Perito Moreno glacier

Abstract: Perito Moreno is the most famous calving glacier of the South Patagonia Icefield, the largest temperate glacier system of the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike most of the glaciers in the region that have strongly retreated in recent decades, the position of Perito Moreno glacier front remained relatively unchanged in the last century. However, earliest photographic documents show that, at the end of the nineteenth century, the front was ca. 800 m behind the current position. There is no reliable information about t… Show more

“…The acoustic basement of the Lago Roca Basin corresponds to the upper Cretaceous Cerro Toro Formation, as was also inferred for the acoustic basement of Brazo Rico and Brazo Sur (Lodolo, Donda, et al, 2020; Lodolo, Lozano, et al, 2020; Lozano et al, 2020). The stratified mudstones and sandstones of Cerro Toro Fm.…”

“…Deposits of the UU are thicker in the depressions of the basement top; they comprise a set of seismic facies (SF‐2 to SF‐5) most of which display similar patterns with layered, parallel reflections. Comparison with other seismic studies in Fuegian lakes (i.e., Lozano, Tassone, Bran, et al, 2018; Lozano, Tassone, Lodolo, et al, 2018; Waldmann et al, 2010; Waldmann, Ariztegui, Anselmetti, Coronato, & Austin Jr., 2010), or even in Brazo Rico and Brazo Sur (Lodolo, Donda, et al, 2020; Lodolo, Lozano, et al, 2020; Lozano et al, 2020) suggests that this configuration represents a glacio‐lacustrine sedimentation type. The lithology of the UU might be analogous to the three uppermost units of varves and rhythmites identified in the core sampled at Bahía Iveco (Del Valle et al, 1995).…”
