The suicide mortality of working physicians and dentists

Abstract: Background Some studies have shown that physicians and dentists have elevated risks of suicide, while other studies have not. AimsUsing all deaths and corresponding census data in 26 US states, we examine the suicide risk for working physicians and dentists. MethodsDeath and census data for working people were obtained from 1984 through 1992. Directly agestandardized suicide rate ratios (SRRs) were calculated for white male and white female physicians and white male dentists. ResultsFor white female physicians… Show more

“…Although the suicide rate of white women was only around half of the high rate compared to their male colleagues, such rate was approximately twice higher than the normal working population [32]. These female physicians had a Suicide Rates Ratio (SRR) of 52.10 compared with working professionals, which was still statistically high [32].…”

“…zdravnikih, medicinskih sestrah, zobozdravnikih, farmacevtih, veterinarjih ter kirurgih, so sicer ugotovile številne raziskave (Hawton, Agerbo, Simkin, Platt in Mellanby, 2011;Lindfors, Meretoja, Luukkonen, Elovainio in Leino, 2009;Petersen in Burnett, 2008;Platt, Hawton, Simkin in Mellanby, 2012;Schernhammer in Colditz, 2004;Skegg, Firth, Gray in Cox, 2010;Wolfersdorf, 2007), a njihovi rezultati niso povsem konsistentni (Hawton idr., 2011), poleg tega se ogroženost spreminja skozi različna časovna obdobja (Roberts idr., 2013;Rosta in Aasland, 2013).

“…3 Increased stressors may partially explain why physicians have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession, at 300 to 400 cases a year. 4 In the past few years, several dissatisfied physicians, residents, and students have contacted the authors about the state of health care. A handful of these orthopedic residents and medical students have created accounts on websites like Dropoutclub.org, which matches physicians with business jobs.…”
