The Sun’s Magnetic Power Spectra over Two Solar Cycles. I. Calibration between SDO/HMI and SOHO/MDI Magnetograms

Yukun Luo,
Jie Jiang,
Ruihui Wang

Abstract: The Sun’s magnetic field is strongly structured over a broad range of scales. Magnetic spatial power spectral analysis provides a powerful tool for understanding the various scales of magnetic fields and their interactions with plasma motions. We aim to investigate the power spectra using spherical harmonic decomposition of high-resolution Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) synoptic magnetograms co… Show more

“…To calculate the solar dipole field, we use the synoptic magnetograms with the polar field corrected. The correction is performed by interpolation using relatively well-observed data during September/March for many years (Sun et al 2011;Sun 2018;Luo et al 2023). The dipole field for the beginning or the end of a cycle is determined by averaging the dipole fields calculated in six CRs near this time.…”

“…Magnetic field observations near polar regions often exhibit a high noise level and contain missing values. Interpolation is applied to obtain missing data (Sun et al 2011;Luo et al 2023), thereby affecting the polar field. As a result, the solar dipole field from the synoptic maps may also deviate from the actual value.…”
