The Supramolecular Self‐Assembly of Aminoglycoside Antibiotics and their Applications

Abstract: Aminoglycosides, a class of antibiotics that includes gentamicin, kanamycin, neomycin, streptomycin, tobramycin and apramycin, are derived from various streptomyces species. Despite the significant increase in the antibacterial resistant pathogens, aminoglycosides remain an important class of antimicrobial drugs due to their unique chemical structure which offers a broad spectrum of activity. The modification of antibiotics and their subsequent use in supramolecular chemistry is rarely reported. Given the impo… Show more

“…Aminoglycosides represents an antibiotics class, including kanamycin, tobramycin, streptomycin and neomycin, etc., derived from several Streptomyces species [ 96 ]. All of these members share a common hexose ring in their structure, normally streptidine for streptomycin molecule or 2-deoxystreptamine and numerous glycosidically linked amino sugars [ 97 ].…”

“…The antibiotics chosen in this study belong to two interrelated classes of antibiotics, namely, aminoglycosides (kanamycin and gentamicin) and macrolides (azithromycin and erythromycin). Aminoglycosidic antibiotics have high antimicrobial efficiency against bacterial infections as they bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial RNA and lead to mistranslation of the proteins . Kanamycin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycosidic antibiotic, extracted from Streptomyces kanamyceticus . , Gentamicin is extracted from Micromonospora purpurea and has a similar mode of interaction as kanamycin.…”

“…Supramolecular self-assembly of antibiotics is a promising strategy to improve therapeutic efficiency, reduce nonspecific cytotoxicity, and depress drug resistance to antibiotics. Bhosale and coworkers have summarized the supramolecular self-assembly of amino-glycoside antibiotics [ 38 ], and for readers interested in this aspect, please refer to the review.…”
