The survival of Escherichia coli upon exposure to irradiation with non-coherent polychromatic polarized light

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The purpose of this work was to examine the influence of non-coherent polarized light upon the growth of Escherichia coli. Experiments were designed to test the main hypothesis that this kind of polychromatic light can produce decimal reductions in numbers of E. coli bacteria. Two strains of E. coli -isolated from ground pork and commercial culture E. coli ATCC 25922, were both exposed to light for 20, 30, 40 and 60 minutes. The source of non-coherent polarized light was a Bioptron-1 lamp (Zepter, Swi… Show more

“…After the addition of an equal volume of fresh TSB medium, cultures were kept in the dark for 2 h at 37 • C followed by dilution, plating, and incubation overnight at 37 • C for CFU counting. The survival rate was calculated using the plate count method presented in the reports of Djurdjevic-Milosevic et al (2011) [28].…”

“…Host range analyses of the 17 phages were carried out in 50 indicators. Twenty-eight (28) indicators on which the phages showed clear lysis or no lysis were sorted for host range lysis pattern comparison (Table 4). Two groups of phages (green and blue) showed similar lysis patterns in all of the indicators, while the rest showed distinctly different lysis patterns.…”

“…After incubation at 30°C for 48 h, the bacterial colonies were counted (colony-forming units, CFU mL −1 ). The inactivation efficiency was evaluated by calculating the survival rate (q) of bacteria according to outlined by Djurdjevic-Milosevic, et al [19] as follows:…”
