The Sustainability of Improvements from Continuing Professional Development in Pharmacy Practice and Learning Behaviors

Abstract: Objective. To assess the long-term sustainability of continuing professional development (CPD) training in pharmacy practice and learning behaviors.Methods. This was a 3-year posttrial survey of pharmacists who had participated in an unblinded randomized controlled trial of CPD. The online survey assessed participants' perceptions of pharmacy practice, learning behaviors, and sustainability of CPD. “…In their CPD records and results from the surveys, participants reported that they were able to apply all five steps of the CPD cycle, succeeded in initiating changes in their practice, and were able to apply learning to work. This is consistent with previous studies that implemented structured educational programmes to familiarise pharmacists with the CPD model and support them to adopt the concept to maintain their competence [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 29 , 30 ].…”

“…The CPD process is a continuous four-step cycle to reflect, plan, act, and evaluate, with each step documented throughout the process. With appropriate training and support, pharmacists can utilize a CPD approach for their life-long learning and professional development [ 7 , 8 ]. Pharmacists who regularly participated in CPD training reported that their perceptions of various aspects of their pharmacy practice improved as a result of their education activities more often compared to pharmacists who participated in traditional CE [ 9 ].…”

“…Since its inception, the committee has been involved in educational outreach, authoring/reviewing numerous CPDrelated publications, and developing CPD resources and tools. Additionally, the committee has participated in and/or supported implementation studies that have demonstrated the use of CPD to support lifelong learning and professional development needs, 29 improved perceptions of pharmacy practice and sustained confidence in the ability to identify learning needs and utilization of CPD concepts, 30,31 and greater likelihood to identify strengths and weaknesses through self-assessment, development of SMART goals, and participation in activities selected to achieve predetermined objectives. 32,33 To guide future initiatives, the CPD Steering Committee conducted a survey of boards of pharmacy in 2011 to assess perspectives and approaches of pharmacist lifelong learning models.…”

“…Other future directions include follow-up from the initial CPD program to determine the frequency of preceptor completion of learning plans as well as incorporation of behavior changes into their clinical teaching. While past literature suggests there can be an initial improvement in behavior changes [ 3 ], longer-term studies have suggested that the efficacy of CPD programs can wane over several years [ 22 ]. This suggests the need for follow-up and refresher CPD programs, which the UW-Madison SOP has incorporated into the preceptor development materials and will continue to determine the impact of in the future.…”
