The Swedish Twin Registry: Establishment of a Biobank and Other Recent Developments

Abstract: The Swedish Twin Registry (STR) today contains more than 194,000 twins and more than 75,000 pairs have zygosity determined by an intra-pair similarity algorithm, DNA, or by being of opposite sex. Of these, approximately 20,000, 25,000, and 30,000 pairs are monozygotic, same-sex dizygotic, and opposite-sex dizygotic pairs, respectively. Since its establishment in the late 1950s, the STR has been an important epidemiological resource for the study of genetic and environmental influences on a multitude of traits,… Show more

“…Using the Illumina 450K array, DNA methylation data of 390,894 autosomal CpGs were obtained from 385 twins (73 MZ, 96 DZ complete twin pairs) enrolled in the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) [16] (Table 1), which is part of the Swedish Twin Registry [17]. The longitudinal EWAS analysis revealed systematic changes of methylation with age.…”

“…The SATSA is part of the Swedish Twin Registry (STR) [17], which is a population-based national register including twins born 1886-2000. The SATSA started in 1984, and continuously collected cognitive and health data every third year with up to ten waves in a total of 861 participants.…”

“…The data were retrieved from SATSA (22), which originates from the population-based Swedish Twin Registry (STR) (23). Participants in SATSA are part of both the old cohort (born 1886-1925) and middle cohort (born 1926-1958) in the STR.…”

“…Data were collected as part of a web survey sent out to a cohort of approximately 32 000 twins born between 1959 and 1985 – the STAGE cohort 21 – part of the Swedish Twin Registry (STR), one of the largest registries of its kind 22, 23. In total, 11 543 individuals participated in the web survey.…”
