The System Usability Scale

Abstract: The system usability scale (SUS;Brooke, 1996) is an instrument commonly utilized in usability testing of commercial products. The goal of this symposium is to discuss the validity of the SUS in usability tests and beyond. This article serves as an introduction to the symposium. Specifically, it provides an overview of the SUS and discusses research questions currently being pursued by the panelists. “…To test the usability of the three apps we used the System Usability Scale (SUS) (see Table 2). The SUS is a free technology agnostic survey with a ten-item, five-point Likert scale, providing a subjective assessment of system usability in a quick way (Brooke 1996;Grier et al 2013). Our investigations showed that the SUS instrument was among the most statistically robust and validated tools, which is also suggested by Bangor et al (2008).…”

“…The results are in line with earlier findings showing a positive correlation between the SUS scores and the scale (r 0.75). Previous studies have found correlations of 0.822 Bangor, Kortum, and Miller (2009), 0.94 Ghosh et al (2018), and 0.848 Grier et al (2013). However, in these earlier studies they were comparing the usability of 2 or more systems.…”

“…Cognitive load refers to the overall task load calculated, using the NASA-TLX questionnaire, for six defined variables (mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration) [ 28 ]. Usability was calculated using the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire [ 29 ]. SUS is a simple, ten item questionnaire that records a user’s subjective assessment of usability.…”
