The Tax Burden on Wastewater and the Protection of Water Ecosystems in EU Countries

Abstract: 80% of all wastewater is discharged into the environment without first eliminating contaminants, and the consequences are cause for concern. The ecotaxes levied on effluents in many developed countries are aimed at preventing and minimizing water pollution and also, in part, helping to finance proper water reclamation facilities. The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the current tax burden in a set of European Union countries on wastewater discharges and to assess its relationship with … Show more

“…At this juncture, instead of totally trusting the counterfactual results generated by the AI, it would be an example of an opportunity where AI-Thinking can be educed. As a suggestion, sustainability analysts might like to consider asking further questions by perusing the works of other sustainability researchers (e.g., see [59][60][61][62][63]). To simulate the worst-case scenario, hard evidence was applied to the node Sustainable Development Goals Index (SDGI), so that 100% of the countries is at the low level (defined as, e.g., 56.7) compared to the original 25.19%; 0% is at the mid-level (defined as, e.g., 71.2) compared to the original 48.31%; and 0% is at the high level (defined as >71.2) compared to the original 26.49%.…”

“…Medical residues discharged in waste (open dumping) reach the soil, and they later gather in the water supplies [25,26]. Once they reach the groundwater, the drugs and their decomposition derivatives can harm the environment and human life [27,28], and disinfection [29] and purification [30] is then needed.…”

“…It includes the environmental cost associated with the negative impact on the resource in accordance with the "polluter pays" principle. The adoption of European regulation has influenced the standards of different countries, involving an improvement of wastewater management, in addition to water protection and pollution reduction policies within each member state [9,10] and breakthroughs in the development of wastewater treatment technologies [11].…”
