The taxonomic implication of leaf anatomy in tribe Sorbarieae (Spiraeoideae: Rosaceae)

Abstract: A comparative study of leaf anatomy in tribe Sorbarieae (Adenostoma, Chamaebatiaria, Sorbaria, Spiraeanthus) including one related genus Lyonothamnus was carried out using light microscopy. Anatomical characteristics of the leaf blade and midrib were described and taxonomically evaluated. The anatomical characters which described in this study are as follows: thickness of leaf midrib, blade in cross section, cuticle, epidermal cell, stoma, trichome, mesophyll, crystal, main vasculature type. All features were … Show more

“…Adenostoma and Lyonothamnus have well-developed cuticles (3.0-10.0 μm), in contrast to the other genera studied (0.2-4.0 μm). This difference is consistent with the leaf anatomical data (Song and Hong 2014). A thick cuticle is usually related to environmental factors, since its main function is in preventing water loss (Almeida et al 2013).…”

“…Therefore, Sorbarieae requires comprehensive taxonomic and systematic investigation. Our previous studies revealed various characteristics that have systematic and taxonomic significance within the Sorbarieae sensu Potter et al (2007), such as leaf anatomy (Song and Hong 2014), leaf epidermal micromorphology (Song and Hong 2016a), petal micromorphology (Song and Hong 2016b), and palynology (Song et al 2016). These results encouraged us to investigate other characteristics to enhance our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships and evolution of characteristics within the Sorbarieae, which is a well-supported monophyletic group within the Spiraeoideae (Potter et al 2007).…”
