The taxonomic relationship of certain environmental flavobacteria to the genus Weeksella

Abstract: Forty environmental strains and reference cultures of Flavobacterium, Cytophaga and Weeksella spp. were examined by numerical taxonomy. Twenty-seven strains were recovered in four phena. Phena 1A and 1B comprised 48% of the strains and were sufficiently similar to the genus Weeksella as to suggest possible inclusion in this genus. They could not be accommodated in the existing species W. virosa and W. zoohelcum. Strains from phenon 2 appear to belong neither in the Flavobacterium or the Weeksella genus. Althou… Show more

“…The genera Capnocytophaga, Ornithobacterium and Riemerella, members of the Flavobacteriaceae, differ from the bacteria studied by their capnophilic metabolism. Bacteria of the genera Bergeyella, Ornithobacterium, Riemerella and Weeksella (Botha et al, 1989) represent solitary rRNA branches that are nonpigmented, while Arenibacter latericius is pigmented. The genera Empedobacter and Chryseobacterium also belong to separate rRNA branches, distinct by several phenotypic properties and a low DNA GjC content (Table 4).…”

“…117 Thus, the ABA decided to leave the rule uncodified as the committee contended that the rule was a doctrine that could be interpreted and applied on a case-by-case basis. 118 Gevurtz contends that the difficulty surrounding the attempt to define the rule stems from an incorrect premise. 119 This premise is the belief that there is a single rule, when in fact there is no single rule as the business judgment rule has a number of different meanings.…”

“…Bergeyella (formerly Weeksella ) zoohelcum is an aerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-motile, non-saccharolytic bacterium which is usually isolated from the upper respiratory tract of dogs, cats and other mammals [1–3]. Most reported cases of human infection by these bacteria are due to animal bites or are associated with prolonged exposure to pets [47].…”
