The technological system of production and innovation: The case of photovoltaic technology in China

Abstract: This research paper studies the Chinese technological system of production and innovation in the field of Photovoltaics (PV). It contributes to a better understanding of the emergence and development of the system by utilising three levels of analysis-the institutional framework of the system, the market dynamics of production and deployment, and the composition of innovation related activities. The analysis demonstrates the interrelated roles of transnational factors, local government policies, and research a… Show more

“…Innovation policy mix is related to applying various policy instruments at multiple policy dominations to address the problems identified. Moreover, recent discussions in the literature leads to the conclusion that policy mixes are more appropriate than using individual instruments to facilitate innovation [43]. The literature indicates that fostering emerging technological innovation systems in the field of clean energy necessitates the application of policy instruments so that problems blocking innovation can be solved.…”

“…Among the wide range of existing renewable energy sources, solar photovoltaics (PV) is considered as "the cleanest and safest technology with which to generate electricity even at the GW production scale" [1, p. 24]. Since the discovery of PV effect in the nineteenth century, the technology has experienced dramatic development vertically -in terms of solar cell types, technological generations and efficiencies [2,3], horizontally -in terms of its associated technical fields in chemistry, physics, electronics, and mechanics [4,1], as well as on the market dynamics level of production and deployment [5,6,7,8].…”

“…Today, development of material components, manufacturing methods, and applications for both PV cell and balance of system (BoS) technologies is a substantial research field. Thousands of corresponding scientific articles as well as patent applications are being published yearly [9,10,7,11]. Patents are widely considered as a bridge between successful research and development activities on the one hand, and commercial markets on the other.…”
