The Test Anxiety Measure for College Students: Examination of Its Psychometric Properties Using an Online Survey With a Canadian Sample

Abstract: The psychometric properties of a new multidimensional measure of test anxiety, the Test Anxiety Measure for College Students (TAM-C), based on theory and current research were examined in a sample of 312 Canadian college students online. The TAM-C consists of a Facilitating Anxiety scale and five test anxiety (Cognitive Interference, Physiological Hyperarousal, Social Concerns, Task Irrelevant Behaviors, and Worry) scales. Results of confirmatory factor analyses validated the TAM-C sixfactor structure. In addi… Show more

“…Along with the Facilitating Anxiety factor, the TAM-C has a Physiological Hyperarousal factor, Task Irrelevant Behaviors factor, Cognitive Interference factor, Worry factor, and Social Concerns factor. The six-factor model has also been reported in studies with Canadian and Australian undergraduate students (Lowe, 2018b(Lowe, , 2019b.…”

“…Fourth, although the present study has a smaller sample size than the ideal, which is a size-to-parameter ratio of 20:1 (Kline, 2010), it met the less ideal criterion (i.e., size-to-parameter ratio between 10:1 and 15:1) recommended by Thompson (2000). Previous studies, such as those conducted by Lowe (2018) and Feldt et al (2015), have adopted such a sample size for model fitting. Therefore, our current sample size can be justified.…”

“…As a result, students may fail the exams. Exam anxiety is widespread among college students [23,24] in different majors like math, history, geography, chemistry, physics, engineering, arts, and music. For example, some students specializing in music have anxiety in exams where they must use a musical instrument [25].…”
