The Therapeutic Effect of Acanthopanax senticosus Components on Radiation-Induced Brain Injury Based on the Pharmacokinetics and Neurotransmitters

Abstract: Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) is a medicinal and food homologous plant with many biological activities. In this research, we generated a brain injury model by 60Co -γ ray radiation at 4 Gy, and gavaged adult mice with the extract with AS, Acanthopanax senticocus polysaccharides (ASPS), flavones, syringin and eleutheroside E (EE) to explore the therapeutic effect and metabolic characteristics of AS on the brain injury. Behavioral tests and pathological experiments showed that the AS prevented the irradiated mice… Show more

“…AS is a medicinal plant in the family of Araliaceae. Previous studies have shown that the active ingredients of AS can significantly improve blood lipid levels and endothelial cell function in patients with acute cerebral infarction, promote the proliferation of neural stem cells in ischemic brain tissue and have therapeutic effects on cerebrovascular diseases such as hypertension and cerebral infarction [18][19][20]. In addition, AS has a sedative effect on the central nervous system, which can improve anxiety, irritability, insomnia, and other symptoms, and is commonly used clinically for the treatment of abnormal affective disorders and neurological disorders [21][22].…”

“…Dried root ethanolic extract from AS has been found to scavenge superoxide anion and hydroxyl radicals [ 4 ]. CA and CGA isolated from AS have antioxidant activities [ 5 ], whereas EB and EE have no significant antioxidant (anti-DPPH) properties [ 6 , 8 ]. To extend these observations, CA, CGA, PCA, EB and EE as ASRE components [ 2 ] were selected for our study.…”

“…In addition, AS positively influences the central nervous system, prevents and treats respiratory infections and improves physical fatigue effects [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. AS extracts, as adaptogens, increase adaptability and survival of organisms under stress, where observed antioxidant properties can positively contribute to the effects [ 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Polysaccharides, flavones and several dozen individual compounds were isolated from AS having numerous biological effects [ 2 , 8 ].…”

“…AS and its extract are widely used in Russia and East Asian countries for specific pharmacological effects involving anticancer, anti‐inflammatory, and cardiovascular protection potencies. It improves physical fatigue effects and increases the survival of organisms under stress 13–19 . AS is also used to treat hypertension and ischemic heart disease in the traditional Chinese system of medicine 20 .…”
