The Top 10 oomycete pathogens in molecular plant pathology

Abstract: Oomycetes form a deep lineage of eukaryotic organisms that includes a large number of plant pathogens which threaten natural and managed ecosystems. We undertook a survey to query the community for their ranking of plant-pathogenic oomycete species based on scientific and economic importance. In total, we received 263 votes from 62 scientists in 15 countries for a total of 33 species. The Top 10 species and their ranking are: (1) Phytophthora infestans; (2, tied) Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis; (2, tied) Phyto… Show more

“…An alternative to marker-assisted screens for identification of novel R proteins are effector-based, high-throughput, in planta expression assays (119). Combined with plant disease epidemiology studies and comparative genomics, these expression assays could aid in the prioritization of effectors present in emerging virulent strains as well as those abundant in numerous other isolates (120).…”

“…Perhaps the most well-known plant-pathogenic oomycetes are the downy mildews, the genera Phytophthora and Pythium. 3 -5 The genus Phytophthora alone contains more than 100 pathogenic species, which are arguably the most devastating pathogens of dicotyledonous plants, 6 causing enormous economic damage to important crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and soybeans. 7 In China, one of the most devastating soil-borne diseases of pepper is caused by Ph.…”

“…On the other hand, sources for natural resistance are present in North American and Asiatic wild Vitis species such as V. riparia, V. ruspestris or V. amurensis, and have been used for breeding since the 19 th century [1,4,5]. However, considering the economic impact of P. viticola, there is still very limited knowledge on mechanisms relevant for the pathogenesis of this oomycete, and the development of alternative control methods for an integrated pest management in grapevine downy mildew would be highly desirable [6].…”
