The toxicological paradigms of aluminum and the etiology of Alzheimer's disease in the nematodeCaenorhabditis elegans

Abstract: This study examined behavioral and enzymatic changes of C. elegans from its exposure to aluminum, and the resulting relationship with Alzheimer's disease. After chronic and acute exposure to aluminum, the results indicated that it alters the cholinergic status and behavior parameters of the nematode, suggesting a relationship between exposure to aluminum and the etiology of AD.

“…In the human body, the Dfx chelates the free iron in serum, ferritin, and hemosiderin, not removing iron from the transferrin, hemoglobin, or cytochromes. Since herb mate extracts contain high concentrations of aluminum and iron [ 46 ], and because of the neurotoxic role of these compounds in the nervous system [ 47 ], the use of compounds that decrease the bioavailability of these toxic metals and inhibit neurotoxicity [ 48 ] is very important. Finally, Dfx can be used as an antioxidant, since its combination with natural antioxidant compounds can even potentiate its effect [ 49 ].…”
