“…From the study, the red blood cellsshowed significantdecrease innumber. This may be due to the harmful effect of the bacterial toxin on the blood cell where C.pseudotuberculosis exhibit properties of exotoxin [10] This finding is in agreement with [11,12]. [13]reported a severe hemolytic anaemia, macrocytic hypochromic and hypochromic normocytic aneamia were observed in sheep experimentally infected with C.pseudotuberculosis.…”

“…All strains of C. pseudotuberculosis, either serotypes I or II, produce a powerful exotoxin that was first characterized by Carne (1940). This exotoxin is a phosphatidylecholine phosphatidohydrolase, better known as phospholipase D. It functions as a sphingomyelinase, catalysing the dissociation of sphingomyelin, an important membrane component, into ceramide phosphate and choline, and it is similar in action to the toxic enzyme found in the brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclcusa (Bernheimer et al., 1985).…”

“…Various biological properties have been attributed to the exotoxin of C. pseudotuberculosis. mainly as the result of studies of culture filtrates (Carne 1940). It has been described as having haemolytic, haemagglutinating and staphylococcalhaemolysin-inhibiting effects in vitro (Love11 and Zaki 1966;Burrell 1979;Burrell 1980a).…”

“…However, the outcome was invariably progressive and fatal, quite unlike the natural ovine or caprine disease (Dickinson and Bull 1931). Further, the in vivo activity of an exotoxin produced by the organism was measured in terms of lethal and dermonecrotic effects in guinea pigs or rabbits respectively (Carne 1940). Indeed, such studies gave rise to a concern by some that meat from infected animals might not be suitable for human consumption (Maddy 1953).…”
