The Trade Competitiveness of Southern Emerging Economies: A Multidimensional Approach Through Cluster Analysis

Abstract: This paper investigates the trade competitiveness of the new emerging Southern economies – China, India, Brazil and South Africa (CIBS) – with respect to their main global partners. Starting from the commonly held view that countries with trade patterns similar to those of emerging countries are likely to suffer losses, we propose a multidimensional approach based on cluster analysis, both crisp and fuzzy, as an alternative strategy for assessing similarity in global trade patterns. On the basis of key trade c… Show more

“…Disdier and Van Tongeren (2010) applied cluster analysis to find out the correlation between the occurrence and coverage of NTMs and the incidence of trade frictions for agri-food products. Montalbano and Nenci (2014) used a multidimensional approach through cluster analysis to study the trade competitiveness of emerging economies (China, India, Brazil, and South Africa) with respect to their global partners. Pioch (2017) considered further the prospects for trade policy convergence of BRICS States.…”

“…To determine the optimal number of groups, we used a dendrogram to display dissimilarity levels between clusters. The heights of the links represent the distance, at which each fusion was made, such that a greater dissimilarity between the objects indicated a greater distance between them and a taller link (Montalbano and Nenci, 2014). The optimal number of groups was derived by comparing the coefficients in the agglomeration schedule, Fig.…”

“…This situation creates a high potential for trade with each other (Venables ). It is a commonly held view that countries with similar trade patterns are likely to be seen as competitors, having less chance to trade with each other (Kaplinsky and Messner ; Montalbano and Nenci ). The conventional theoretical studies often use two‐country, two‐factor, two‐industry models (2×2×2) to illustrate the insights of the model.…”
