“…These discharges are coined as combined sewer over ow (CSO) in case of combined sewer systems. Previous studies highlighted CSO pollution and its adverse impacts on the health of the receiving water bodies (Hvitved-Jacobsen 1982; Phillips et al 2012;Rechenburg et al 2006), as well as indicated remarkable contribution of sewer sediments to quality of CSOs (Chebbo et al, 1995;Gromaire et al, 2001;Ashley et al, 2004;Gasperi et al, 2010). The accumulation of these in-sewer deposits also causes more frequent CSOs due to reduction in conveyance e ciency of the sewer network (Crabtree 1989;Seco 2014;Veliskova & Sokac 2019).…”

“…Estimated contribution of sewer sediments to MP contamination in CSOsPrevious studies have indicated the signi cant contribution of suspended particulate matter from in-sewer remobilization to high contamination levels in wet weather ows. Given the abundance of MPs in sewer sediments, water ow during these intensive occurrences is expected to exhibit high concentrations of MPs(Chebbo et al 1995; Ashley et al 2004; Gasperi et al 2010). Eq.…”

“…The annual SS load due to CSOs has been calculated as much as 30% of the annual dry weather flow (DWF) load (Field & Struzeski 1972). Chebbo et al (1995) reported that the deposits seemed to provide, for an average or strong rainfall events, 30 to 45% of the total SS which incorporated 40 to 80% of organic matter. Chebbo et al (2001) also reported that the contribution of in-sewer deposits to SS load in wet weather flows (WWFs) from CSS was 26 to 82% (mean: 63%).…”

“…Turbidity can therefore be used in several operational applications. Most pollutants are in fact conveyed by total suspended solids (TSS) (Chebbo et al 1995;Ashley et al 2005), and a linear relationship between turbidity and TSS can often be established (Deletic & Maksimovic 1998;Maré chal 2000;Mels et al 2004;Fletcher & Deletic 2007), although this relationship is capable of varying over time. In this paper, we will consider turbidity signal as representative of TSS dynamics and will concentrate on the implementation of turbidity monitoring for pollution-based real time control (P-RTC).…”
