The Transition to Practice from Residency and Fellowship

Abstract: There is currently no standard method or time requirement devoted to the teaching of practice management in orthopaedic residency, but there is widespread agreement that it is a necessary part of orthopaedic education.Overall, there are 3 major components to an effective transition-to-practice model: mock independent practice, appropriate feedback and oversight, and consistent exposure. An overarching theme is the importance of debriefing by senior faculty, coupled with mock practice scenarios.

“…To close this gap, some have suggested a more standardized transition-to-practice model 45 . Sommi et al emphasized 3 components of an effective transition from training to independent practice: mock independent practice, appropriate feedback and oversight, and consistent exposure 45 . The authors make the point that skills, such as billing and coding, are often neglected in residency programs, and successful transitions would include opportunities to run a practice.…”

“…Although this discrepancy may be explained by the perceived competence, there is truth that younger surgeons often do not know what they do not know, an idea later explained by the Hierarchy of Competence.
