The treatment of facial asymmetry: Review

Abstract: Some degree of congenital or acquired asymmetry is normal and universal. Significant facial asymmetry, however, causes both aesthetic, as well as functional problems. The comprehensive management of facial symmetry is scarcely addressed.1-5 Differing etiologies, heterogeneous material, and different ages of patients tend to produce fragmentary reports, the more so as evidence-based evaluation of outcomes is almost impossible. Therefore, a presentation of the general rules of treatment, illustrated by our own m… Show more

“…In his four books on human proportion, Albrecht Duerer used exactly symmetrical schemes for his depicted faces based on the data of his own anthropometric studies [31]. However, with more sophisticated measuring methods, it became obvious that a smaller degree of facial asymmetry is physiological, but if a certain threshold of asymmetry is exceeded, the face will be perceived as disfigured [32,33]. To determine whether a condition should be considered to be within the "normal range" or pathological, it became necessary to define methods to measure asymmetry in an objective and reproducible manner.…”

“…Uma boa harmonia e simetria facial se mostra como um caminho para boas relações entre os indivíduos e melhor qualidade de vida (Heydenrich, 2020). Contudo, deve-se observar o grau da desarmonia facial, quando existente, e considerar os possíveis futuros problemas estéticos e funcionais que podem surgir ao longo da vida (Kobus, Kobus-Zalésna, 2017;Medeiros et al, 2020).…”

“…In patients with lesions in the head and neck region, these gradually growing lesions may lead to perceived esthetic issues, particularly facial asymmetry [ 4 ]. Of note, interventions for facial asymmetry are recommended in the early stages of lesion growth, as correction in more advanced stages often presents further complications [ 5 ].…”
