The tribological performance of a long chain alkyl phenylboric ammonium derivative and its interaction with ZDDP

Abstract: A long chain alkyl phenylboric ammonium derivative (DBBM) was synthesized as a lubricating additive. The tribological performances of DBBM and combinations of DBBM and ZDDP as additives were evaluated, which suggests that DBBM has better tribological properties than ZDDP. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy was used for the analysis of thermal films and tribofilms. The results indicate that the boron in additive mainly forms trigonal and tetrahedral coordination boron both in thermal films and tr… Show more

“…Thus, it is essential to understand the interaction of nanoparticles with conventional additives used in lubricants. Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP), as a common anti-wear additive for lubricating oils, has been used for more than 70 years and is still the critical component of almost all modern gasoline and diesel engine lubricants [13]. Therefore, it is meaningful to study the interaction between WS 2 nanoparticles and ZDDP.…”

“…It is now recognized that ZDDP can form reaction film on rubbing surfaces, which consists primarily of amorphous zinc phosphate [14][15][16]. The reaction film called "tribofilm" is considered to control wear by limiting direct contact of the two rubbing surfaces, thereby preventing the surfaces' adhesion and reducing the transient contact stresses in the course of sliding [13].…”

“…This is considered as the primary constraint on their further practical application. [35][36][37] Introducing nitrogen into the molecule is a particularly effective approach to improve the hydrolytic stability of borate esters. 15,38 Yang et al 39 synthesized a novel N-containing heterocyclic borate ester (MTTDB).…”

“…) are shown. It is evident that the detected compounds are mainly FeS, FeSO 3 , FeS 2[27], and FeSO 4 .Figures 5(a) and 5(b) show that sulfate and sulfide distributed unevenly on the tribofilm of the steel ball surface and the ratio of FeS/FeSO 4 varies with depth. The change of the FeS/FeSO 4 ratio on the bottom layer shows little regularity with time, but the content of FeSO 4 increases significantly with time.…”
