The Tromsø Recommendations for Citation of Research Data in Linguistics

Abstract: The Tromsø Recommendations for Citation of Research Data in Linguistics were published in 2019, with a twofold objective: To provide a guide on how to cite research data in linguistics according to good practices, and to contribute to making linguistics a more transparent science. This paper presents the rationale behind the recommendations as well as the development process. The goal is to demonstrate how collaboration, engagement, and different types of expertise are crucial factors to progress towards a cul… Show more

“…Similarly, in the current study, children produced forms with initial accent more often than it appears to be present in adult speech. Application of Andreassen’s (2013) findings on French schwa to the current data leads us to expect that, after a period in which children’s speech is subject to phonological or developmental constraints which result in a high degree of initial accent production, children’s speech would then be subject to the stylistic and phonetic constraints that are operative in adult speech. Further research of a longitudinal nature is needed to confirm when and how children’s realizations of initial accent approximate the patterns of the adult input.…”

“…We can compare the acquisition of initial accent to that of schwa in French which is frequently deleted in adult speech (e.g., cerise [səʁiz]/[sʁiz]) and, thus, is optionally present in the input. Findings on the acquisition of schwa in French show that children are more likely to produce the variant with schwa even when they are exposed to input forms in which schwa is absent ( Andreassen, 2013 ). Similarly, in the current study, children produced forms with initial accent more often than it appears to be present in adult speech.…”

“…Yet, even in a collaborative approach (Fenlon, 2020;Wasson et al, 2016), the curators must not be seen merely as service providers -their work deserves equal mention and credit to other project outcomes, with funding available for their work (cf. Andreassen et al, 2019;Nowviskie, 2011). On the contrary, curation may form the core of all endeavours related to the data, in a "curation-centric" approach (Hedstrom, 2012).…”

“…We must therefore consider the different agents in curation and the recognition they receive for their work. While publishing was often the main activity for scholars that would allow them to earn academic merit, scholars in language documentation have long been calling for the recognition of documentary activities and creation of data sets (Andreassen et al, 2019;Berez-Kroeker et al, 2018;Linguistic Society of America, 1994. The present paper follows their argumentation but aims to frame the activities worthy of recognition to also comprise work on pre-existing materials and not just new documentations (cf.…”
