The UEFA Champions League seeding is not strategy-proof since the 2015/16 season

Abstract: Fairness has several interpretations in sports, one of them being that the rules should guarantee incentive compatibility, namely, a team cannot be worse off due to better results in any feasible scenario. The current seeding regime of the most prestigious annual European club football tournament, the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League, is shown to violate this requirement since the 2015/16 season. In particular, if the titleholder qualifies for the first pot by being a champion in… Show more

“…ELO-ratings were included as a measure of team strength, provided by the API of http://www.clubelo.com, accessed on 1 July 2020, which is freely available. This source provides ELO-ratings for each team of over 50 (inter)national leagues, including the UEFA Europa League and Champions League, and has previously been used for scientific purposes [22,23]. Each game, both national and international, results in an exchange in ELO-points (Equation ( 1)), where dr is the difference in ELO-rating between two clubs and R is the result (1 for win, 0.5 for draw and 0 for loss).…”

“…The design of a hybrid tournament consisting of round-robin groups followed by a knock-out phase raises several interesting theoretical questions on various fields such as fairness (Cea et al, 2020;Guyon, 2018), or strategy-proofness (Csató, 2019b(Csató, , 2020bDagaev & Sonin, 2018;Pauly, 2014;Vong, 2017). The current paper has attempted to explore the potential effects of creating groups with different quality through the example of the EHF Champions League, the most prestigious men's handball club competition in Europe.…”

“…Descriptive statistics show that, on average, in the English Premier League the home teams score 1.5 goals while the away ones 1.2. Hence, in a certain measure the home teams are more willing to win a match (probabily due to the so called home bias effect Goossens et al 2012;Csató 2020). Moreover, in almost the 50% of the matches both team scores and there are not less than 3 total goals.…”
