The Ukrainian-American Study of Leukemia and Related Disorders among Chornobyl Cleanup Workers from Ukraine: I. Study Methods

Abstract: Thus far there are relatively few data on the risk of leukemia among those who were exposed to external radiation during cleanup operations following the Chornobyl nuclear accident, and results have not been consistent. To investigate this issue further, we assembled a cohort of 110,645 male cleanup workers from Ukraine and identified cases of leukemia occurring during the period 1986 to 2000. Detailed interviews were conducted and individual bone marrow doses were estimated using a new time-and-motion method … Show more

“…We ascertained potential cases of leukemia occurring within the cohort between 1986 and 2000 through computerized linkage (11) of cohort records and a Provisional Leukemia Registry (10). We established an expert international panel of five hematologists and hematopathologists to review all diagnoses (12).…”

“…Epidemiological study "The Ukrainian-American study of leukemia and related disorders among Chоrnobyl cleanup workers" was held on a cohort of 110,645 male cleanup workers from Ukraine. Leukemia, MDS, and multiple myeloma cases occurring during the period 1986 to 2000 were identified [14]. The cases of MDS were initially identified using the FAB system [6], later in 2007 they were reclassified according to the WHO system [7].…”

“…The cases of MDS were initially identified using the FAB system [6], later in 2007 they were reclassified according to the WHO system [7]. MDS was confirmed in 7 cases out of 139 ones initially referred to the expert panel, and one more case of MDS was reclassified using the WHO system as acute myelogenous leukemia, bringing the total for MDS to six [14].…”

“…The persisting elevation of thyroid cancer risk in this population underscores the need to continue to follow these individuals to assess whether the excess risk persists or declines with time. A case-control study of leukemia among clean-up workers who, unlike residents, received primarily wholebody protracted external radiation found a significant increase in risk of total leukemia with evidence of an increase in leukemias other than chronic lymphocytic leukemia and in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (15).…”
