The Unam-Kias Catalog of Isolated Galaxies

Abstract: A new catalog of isolated galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5) is presented. A total of 1520 isolated galaxies were found in 1.4 sr of sky. The selection criteria in this UNAM-KIAS catalog are a variation on the criteria developed by Karachentseva, including full redshift information. Through an image processing pipeline that takes advantage of the high-resolution (∼0. 4 pixel −1 ) and high dynamic range of the SDSS images, a uniform g-band morphological classification for all t… Show more

“…The simulations of Mastropietro et al (2005) have shown that indeed late-type spirals can be reprocessed into early-type dwarfs through cluster processes (such as harassment) and that these dwarfs do retain their stellar disk structure. On the other hand, observations of a small number of isolated early-type dwarf galaxies (e.g., Fuse 2008;Hernández-Toledo et al 2010) argue against cluster transformation processes as the sole explanation for the formation of these objects.…”

“…This average overlap is mainly due to the different isolation criteria. The isolation criterion followed by Hernández-Toledo et al (2010) is a mixed criterion between the CIG and a pure 3D definition. The distribution of the distance for neighbours with ∆ ≤ 500 km s −1 within 1 Mpc around galaxies in the comparison samples is shown in Fig.…”

“…Our sample comes from the catalog of local isolated galaxies by Hernández-Toledo et al (2010), which includes the redshift information creating a robust isolated sample of pure Es. We explore whether very isolated ellipticals differ in some photometric, spectroscopic, and structural properties with those of the Coma supercluster, and whether both isolated and highdensity ellipticals follow similar correlations with mass.…”
