The unappreciated importance of blood pressure in recent and older atrial fibrillation trials

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation and arterial hypertension represent two common clinical conditions that frequently coexist, especially in older individuals, and are associated with increased risk of stroke. Antihypertensive therapy reduces the risk of stroke by approximately 40%. It has been observed that stroke rates were reduced by 10% for every 2-mmHg reduction of blood pressure. Antithrombotic therapy reduces significantly the risk for ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation at the expense of increased ri… Show more

“…The presence of arterial hypertension will increase further the risk of stroke in a patient with AF. Moreover, the use of anti-hypertensive therapy in patients with AF reduces the risk of stroke by $40%, while, for every 2-mmHg reduction of blood pressure, stroke rates will be reduced by 10% 8 . Arterial hypertension and AF frequently co-exists, since they share common pathophysiologic mechanisms and risk factors 9 .…”

“…Moreover, there are also several comorbidities associated with AF, such as: ischemic; hypertensive and valvular heart disease; congestive heart failure; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and diabetes mellitus 7 . Hypertension may be considered as the most important risk factor for the development of AF 8 . The prevalence of arterial hypertension in the AF populations from several clinical trials is very high, ranging from 80-90% 8 .…”

“…Moreover, hypertension is known to be related to bleeding complications in patients on anticoagulant therapy. As a result, various hemorrhagic scores include hypertension as an important variable, which highlights the key role of hypertension management in AF patients 25 …”

“…Согласно Европейским рекомендациям по диагностике и лечению АГ, гипертония предрасполагает к развитию нарушений ритма сердца, чаще всего ФП [32,[35][36][37], более того, специалисты рекомендуют рассматривать ФП как проявление ГБ [38]. Даже высокий нормальный уровень АД связан с инцидентной ФП [39,40].…”
