The unbearable lightness of technocratic efforts at dengue control

Abstract: Summaryobjective To identify key elements that should provide an added value and assure sustainable effects of the deployment of technical tools for Aedes aegypti control. We assessed community perceptions and household risk behaviour at baseline and after 9 months, and measured the trial's impact through entomological indices.results Perceived self efficacy to solve A. aegypti infestation and prevent dengue was not modified. We found no changes in behaviour. In the study area the container indices decreased s… Show more

“…While vector control has had mixed results with regard to decreasing DENV infections [36], it is still effective at reducing DENV-transmitting mosquitoes by eliminating container habitats [37], [38]. However, dengue risk perceptions need to be addressed within these communities to make these efforts sustainable [39], [40].…”

“…The effectiveness of “traditional” methods, such as episodic insecticide space-spraying [5] and top-down vertical programmes [6] has been questioned. The development of innovative integrated vector management (IVM) programs with novel instruments and approaches is a priority [3], with greater awareness of the sociocultural needs and participation of affected communities in vector control [7].…”
