The Unfavourable Impact of Street Traffic on Water Distribution Pipelines

Abstract: This article analyses the relation between the failures that occurred in the water supply network and the road traffic in the city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania. The calculations in this case study were made using the Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2011 software. In the case study, the following types of pipes were analysed: steel, gray cast iron, ductile cast iron and high density polyethylene (HDPE). While in most studies only a few sections of pipelines, several types of pipelines and certain m… Show more

“…Also, the pipeline sections subjected to testing were made of high-density polyethylene, HDPE200, being considered a flexible material, which is currently used on a wide scale in the construction of water distribution pipelines. Table 1 shows the mechanical and elastic features of the HDPE material for the outer diameter of the 200 mm pipe [7,17]. The experimental design of the seismic safety system is an assembly: The pipeline section has flexible reinforcement, consisting of two HDPE200 pipe segments joined by a Flexseal SC200 flexible piece ( Figure 1).…”

“…Tubes and pipes for water pipelines in the water supply and distribution systems were made of the following materials: Asbestos (currently forbidden), reinforced concrete, plastics, grey cast iron, steel, etc. In the case of pipes below 400 mm in diameter, the most used material is cast iron and then plastics [7,8].…”
