The Unified Power Quality Conditioner Control Method Based on the Equivalent Conductance Signals of the Compensated Load

Abstract: This paper proposes a new control method for a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This method is based on the load equivalent conductance approach, originally proposed by Fryze. It can be useful not only for compensation for nonactive current and for improving voltage quality, but it also allows one to perform some unconventional functions. This control method can be performed by extending the orthodox notion of ‘static’ load equivalent conductance into a time-variable signal. It may be used to characte… Show more

“…Furthermore, a comprehensive study was carried out on various phase synchronization techniques that were used to control the working of the SHAPF (Yap et al, 2019). The novel technique was introduced for the UPQC to improve the power quality to regulate energy transfer between sources and loads (Szromba, 2020).…”

“…Tracing the DC-side voltage signal can be successfully used to obtain the reference signals for compensation. The so-called indirect technique of calculating reference signals exploits such approach [9,[30][31][32][33][34]. The indirect control technique was introduced to power electronics as a tool for power quality improvement by Dixon and Ooi [35].…”

“…An interesting situation arises when this DC-side energy balancing ceases to be treated as an inconvenience of the indirect method. Moreover, these changes in DC-side voltage may be used to obtain a reference signal that can be related to the active power existing in the source-active filter-load system, and, finally, to the demanded active current of the source [32,33,[36][37][38][39][40][41]. This reference signal can be a pattern for the source current.…”

“…However, the detailed study was carried out on different types of phase synchronization methods that are applicable to control the operation of SHAF [30]. The new load equivalent conductance method was applied for UPQC for improving voltage quality with a view of regulating energy transfer between sources and loads [31]. An adaptive hysteresis band with FLC was introduced to solar-connected nine-level UPQC with an intention to obtain distortion-free voltage waveforms [32].…”
