The University in the Global Age

Abstract: This book explores different national models of university systems, including their historical development. It examines major themes confronting higher education, such as globalization, the growth of regulatory states, markets and education as a tradable service, and new providers utilizing the latest information and communication technologies. It also looks at implications for traditional universities and national governments.

“…It is generally assumed in scholarly and policy literature that major higher education systems in the European Union (EU) and in the OECD area will continue to expand in the next decade (King 2004;OECD 2008;Santiago et al 2008;Altbach et al 2010;Attewell and Newman 2010;EC 2011). Expanding systems generally contribute to social inclusion almost by definition because, as recently emphasized in a large-scale comparative study on stratification in higher education, the expanding pie "extends a valued good to a broader spectrum of the population" (Arum et al 2007, 29).…”

“…It is generally assumed in both current scholarly and policy literature that major higher education systems in the European Union will be further expanding in the next decade (Altbach et al 2010 ;King 2004 ;Morgan et al 2009 ;Trow 2007 ;Attewell and Newman 2010 ;EC 2011 ). Expanding systems, in general terms, tend to contribute to social inclusion and equity because the expanding pie, as argued in a recent cross-national study, "extends a valued good to a broader spectrum of the population" (Arum et al 2007 : 29).…”
