The upgrade of the CMS RPC system during the first LHC long shutdown

Abstract: The CMS muon system includes in both the barrel and endcap region Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC). They mainly serve as trigger detectors and also improve the reconstruction of muon parameters. Over the years, the instantaneous luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider gradually increases. During the LHC Phase 1 (∼ first 10 years of operation) an ultimate luminosity is expected above its design value of 10 34 cm −2 s −1 at 14 TeV. To prepare the machine and also the experiments for this, two long shutdown periods… Show more

“…RPC-triggered particles must have a minimum of four RPC hits (three if not geometrically possible) within the trigger time window [24,25]. A similar requirement also holds for particles triggered by the cathode strip chambers (CSCs) positioned at η ≥ 1.6, as the CSC trigger relies on three different track segments to reconstruct p T [26].…”

“…So, the first natural step to assure the additional redundancy is starting to complete the system, at least up to |η|=1.6, with the fourth RPC station. This upgrade consists of 144 RPC chambers, to be mounted in two concentric rings (RE4/2 and RE4/3) per station, with 36 chambers per ring [6]. The relative effort of chamber construction has already started and is really world-wide collaborative; bakelite is produced in Italy, gaps are assembled in Korea, chambers mechanics is provided by China, detector electronics is procured in Pakistan, and the final detector assembly is being done in India, Belgium and CERN.…”

“…CSCs were only installed in the very forward region (1.8 < |η| < 2.4), and RPCs were missing completely and covered only the first three endcap disks (|η| < 1.6) [3].…”
