Modern agriculture necessitates the use of techniques and tools that pollute the environment less and improve the safety of food and feed production. In the field of plant protection, drones are attracting increasing attention due to their versatility and applicability in a variety of environmental and working conditions. Drone crop spraying techniques offer several advantages, including increased safety and cost effectiveness through autonomous and programmed operations based on specific schedules and routes. One of the main advantages of using drones for plant protection is their ability to monitor large areas of crops in a short amount of time. In addition to crop protection management, using drones for augmentative biocontrol facilitates the distribution of beneficial organisms to the exact locations where they are required, which can increase the effectiveness of biocontrol agents while reducing distribution costs. In this context, given the very limited commercial use of drones in the Western Balkans’ agri-food sector, the use of drones in the agri-food industry is a topic that needs to be elaborated on and highly promoted. Additionally, the specific legal regulations in Serbia that currently limit the use of drones in agriculture must be outlined. Conventional crop production is still significantly more prevalent in Serbia, but given the region’s continuous technological progress, there is no doubt that farmers’ education and future investments in precision agriculture will most likely increase the use of state-of-the-art technologies and drones in agriculture.

X-ray imaging enables the study of morphodynamic and physiological processes in living organisms. However, the required photon flux increases with the desired spatial resolution and with it the requirements for dose efficiency. We realize full-field imaging at micrometer resolution close to the highest possible dose efficiency. This is achieved by combining propagation-based phase contrast with Bragg crystal optics and a high-Z single-photon-counting detector, all designed for X-ray energies that allow minimal dose for a given image quality. We prove the superior imaging performance compared to conventional systems and, in particular, show a substantial increase in dose efficiency for high spatial frequencies that comprise the relevant high-resolution components of the image. We demonstrate the potential of the technique by a behavioral in vivo study of submillimeter-sized parasitoid chalcid wasps within their host eggs before and during emergence. The findings show that the technique opens up new possibilities for dose-sensitive studies at micrometer resolution, not only in life sciences but also in materials research.

The European pepper moth (Duponchelia fovealis) is predominant in the main strawberry production areas, including Brazil, as an important invasive pest and causes substantial damage to the crop. This damage is mainly attributed to the lack of effective management strategies. A promising alternative for managing this pest is implementing biological control through releasing natural enemies. This study determined the dispersal capacity of Trichogramma pretiosum for the management of D. fovealis in a strawberry crop in a low tunnel system 24, 48, and 72 h after parasitoid release. The experiments were carried out on strawberry farms in the mountainous region of Espírito Santo. Tunnels measuring 1.20 m wide by 50 m long were selected, in which artificial infestations of 30, 60, 90, and 120 eggs of D. fovealis were made on both sides of the strawberry tunnel at distances of 3, 7, 11, and 15 m, respectively, from the central point where the parasitoids were released. After the initial 24 h, new eggs were placed to replace the infested ones; the replacement was repeated at 48 and 72 h. The results indicated that, in strawberry plantations, T. pretiosum was efficient in parasitism. There was no difference between parasitism 24 and 48 h after parasitoid release, but parasitism was substantially lower after 72 h. The dispersion capacity of T. pretiosum was 14.21 linear meters, corresponding to an area of 17.05 m2. It is recommended that 93,000 T. pretiosum females be released per hectare every three days.
