The use and impact of quality of life assessment tools in clinical care settings for cancer patients, with a particular emphasis on brain cancer: insights from a systematic review and stakeholder consultations

Abstract: PurposePatient-reported data are playing an increasing role in health care. In oncology, data from quality of life (QoL) assessment tools may be particularly important for those with limited survival prospects, where treatments aim to prolong survival while maintaining or improving QoL. This paper examines the use and impact of using QoL measures on health care of cancer patients within a clinical setting, particularly those with brain cancer. It also examines facilitators and challenges, and provides implicat… Show more

“…Still, systematic symptom assessment is not part of routine oncological care, 381,[384][385][386] even though this is frequently employed in clinical trials. 387 For patients with advanced cancer, for whom symptom management is a central goal of care, systematic use of PROMs is even more important and is a prerequisite for optimal symptom management. 318 Relieving burdensome symptoms is therefore a core task within patient-centredness and a special obligation on part of the physicians.…”

“…HRQOL domains such as physical function, mental health, and social support have all been linked to survival in older men and women with cancer and with other chronic diseases . Despite their growing support in the literature, HRQOL measures are not widely employed in practice settings due to time and resource constraints, lack of knowledge regarding how to assess HRQOL in patients, and lack of understanding about how to use the gathered information . Therefore, there is a need to develop simple tools to allow clinicians to better incorporate HRQOL into the management of older women with breast cancer.…”

“…In the context of adult oncology, the assessment of HRQL in clinical practice facilitates communication, improves symptom control and patient satisfaction and reduces hospital admissions . Yet the awareness of oncologists, with respect to the usefulness of HRQL measures in clinical practice, is generally poor . However, point‐of‐care assessment of HRQL in AYAs with cancer is eminently feasible .…”
