The use of a plus-maze to measure anxiety in the mouse

Abstract: To investigate whether an elevated plus-maze consisting of two open and two closed arms could be used as a model of anxiety in the mouse, NIH Swiss mice were tested in the apparatus immediately after a holeboard test. Factor analysis of data from undrugged animals tested in the holeboard and plus-maze yielded three orthogonal factors interpreted as assessing anxiety, directed exploration and locomotion. Anxiolytic drugs (chlordiazepoxide, sodium pentobarbital and ethanol) increased the proportion of time spent… Show more

“…The EPM was conducted as described previously (File, 2001;Holmes et al, 2003a;Lister, 1987). The apparatus comprised of two open arms (25 Â 8 cm 2 ) and two closed arms (25 Â 8 Â 12 cm 3 ) that extended from a common central platform (8 Â 8 cm 2 ).…”

“…A correlation of X95% between scoring by a trained observer and the Ethovision tracking system was determined prior to this set of experiments. The elevated plus maze has been successfully used as a test for anxiolytic agents (Lister, 1987;Pellow et al, 1985). Both ethanol (Wilson et al, 2004;Lister, 1987) and diazepam (Pellow et al, 1985;Wilson et al, 2004) increase open arm behavior in the elevated plus maze.…”

“…The elevated plus maze (Lister, 1987), made of black painted plywood and consisting of two open arms (5 Â 30 cm) and two enclosed arms (5 Â 30 Â 15 cm), was used to study the effect of 2-PMPA on learning and memory retrieval in mice. The arms extended from a central platform (5 Â 5 cm).…”
