The Use of an Anesthesia Information Management System for Prediction of Antiemetic Rescue Treatment at the Postanesthesia Care Unit

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate predictors for postoperative nausea and vomiting by using online anesthesia records. With the help of computerized data evaluation, 7 of 34 variables could be detected as risk factors. By implementing an automatic score into the record keeping system, an individual risk calculation could be made possible.

“…25 Intraand postoperative use of intravenous opioids increase the risk of PONV. 26,27 In contrast, a single intrathecal administration of fentanyl does not increase the frequency of PONV. 28,29 The frequency of PONV was similar in the two groups in the present study, although opioid was used intraoperatively in the experimental group.…”

“…Postoperative nausea and vomiting have been associated for many years with the use of general anaesthetics for surgical procedures 5,10 The incidence of PONV is approximately 9% to 10% during the stay in the post anaesthesia care unit and increases to 30% during the first 24 hours postoperatively, leading to delayed discharge or, rarely, serious complications 11 . There are hundreds of published randomized controlled trials investigating the efficacy of interventions which are thought to have impact on the incidence of PONV.…”

“…The use of volatile anesthetics, nitrous oxide 25 and intra/post-operative opioids are risk factors related to anaesthesia. 26,27 One component we could influence was the choice of anesthesia. Epidural anesthesia was used in FTS group to exclude the effect from volatile components.…”
