For all articles the ELISA and WB tests did not form part of the reference standard.…”

“…Three papers in Spanish were included [62], [64], [76]. Thirty-one (81.5%) articles reported using a case-control design and the remaining seven [53], [57], [65], [66], [68], [69], [75] (18.5%) a cross-sectional design. Thirty-two of the 38 (84.2%) articles collected samples prospectively and six [53], [65], [66], [69], [74], [85] (15.8%) retrospectively; two [65], [75] (5.2%) articles reported the use of a randomly selected subset of the sample for validation with the reference standard.…”

“…Antibody tests (ELISA) to detect Hp infection in various body fluids were the first to appear, but they have failed to provide adequate accuracy to replace gastric biopsy as the gold standard, especially in young children. 4,[7][8][9] The 13 C urea breath test (UBT) was developed to detect Hp organisms by measuring the radiolabel carbon in the breath of infected children. Studies from Europe and Canada reported a very good accuracy rate, [10][11][12] and expert guidelines have suggested this method for monitoring bacterial eradication after therapy.…”

“…As blood sampling is not needed, these tests are extremely noninvasive and thus, their possible use especially in small children is of interest. However, also in recent papers, these tests have shown disappointingly low sensitivities [68,69]. In a Chinese population, a rapid urine test was highly accurate (sensitivity 96.7%, specificity 95.2%) as compared to invasive tests [70].…”
