The use of benzodiazpines and related drugs amongst older people in Sweden: Associated factors and concomitant use of other psychotropics

Abstract: One in four of the elderly used one or more BZD/BZDRD, which should be prescribed cautiously and with the recognition of the potentially negative effects. There were differences in patterns of use for different BZDs/BZDRDs, even within the same drug class. Hence, large study populations are needed for future research of individual BZDs/BZDRDs.

“…As is the case with benzodiazepine use, the probability of a patient using zolpidem increased with age, female sex, and concomitant use of other psychotropics 17,18 ; our results confirmed this pattern. Kripke 11,19,20 has extensively studied the association between hypnotics and cancer risk, and his published work addresses this issue.…”

“…3,50 Similar to previous studies, 7,8,14,20,51 we found adults had increased odds of long-term sedative use if they were women, if they had low incomes and if they had relatively poor health status. We also found that having a surname of Chinese or South Asian origin was associated with a protective effect on the odds of long-term sedative use.…”

“…Studies in other countries have also shown the improper, i.e., the beyond guideline, use BZD-Z by elderly. [4][5][6][7][8] Our results have shown that in Norway for most years more than half of users used well over the maximum amounts suggested by guidelines. In numbers this means that more than 70 000 Norwegians are taking excess BZD-Z annually just for this age group.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8] One would hope that after many warnings and repeated emphasis on limiting use, at least see some trend towards improvement in use would be seen. Our objectives then are to examine BZD-Z use in elderly people: Is BZD-Z use changing over the years, and, if so, is it in the direction of increased compliance with guidelines?…”
