Abstract:Inorganic aluminum or iron salts have been used for many decades to coagulate colloidal particles in surface water prior to flocculation, sedimentation and/or filtration. Although effective, inorganic coagulants have several disadvantages including large chemical dosages required for treating eutrophic waters, large volumes of chemical sludge produced, and toxic effects of metallic coagulants on the aquatic environment. Chitosan is a natural cellulose-like copolymer of glucosamine and N-acetyl-glucosamine. Because of their biodegradability chitosan-based materials have been suggested as a more eco-friendly coagulant for water and wastewater treatment. Chitosan was an effective coagulant in several prior laboratory studies. Practical application of chitosan as a drinking water treatment coagulant is evaluated here through a series of jar tests. The effectiveness of chitosan is compared to aluminum sulphate and ferric chloride with regard to treatment of algal-ladened waters. The optimum chemical dose for coagulation, optimum pH, and effectiveness for algae removal was determined for each coagulant. Practical aspects of applying chitosan at full-scale and the impact of feeding this chemical on overall treated water quality are addressed.

Production of potable water from most raw water sources usually uses the coagulation/flocculation process to remove turbidity. Alum is widely used as a coagulant. However, there is concern about its associated risk of Alzheimer disease. As a result, there has been considerable interest in the development of natural coagulants and coagulant aids in order to reduce the dose of alum. This study aimed to evaluate the use of the Corchorus Olitorius L. (COL), a leaf vegetable grown in Africa and the Middle East, as a novel coagulant aid. COL has important advantages over other coagulant aids. It is an agricultural waste that is widely produced and does not require further chemical treatment. Tests were carried out to evaluate the optimal dosages and conditions required to achieve optimum removal of both turbidity and humic acid. Based on the results of jar test, COL is an efficient coagulation aid. It has the ability to reduce both the primary coagulant dose from 600 mg l -1 to 300 mg l -1 and the residual turbidity from 5.63 to 0.26 NTU. This novel coagulant aid also reduced the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration to zero level. It also increased the rate of flocculation.

Alum and ferric chloride were used individually as coagulants to remove P25 TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) from a simulated wastewater. Previous studies have addressed the use of alum, polyaluminum chloride, chitosan, and polyaluminum chloride with chitosan for coagulation of NPs. A goal of this study was to reduce chemical usage associated with wastewater treatment by examining the coagulation effectiveness of chitosan in conjunction with alum. To further reduce chemical consumption during coagulation, the initial solution pH was limited to 6 or 8. A range of alum doses removed NPs from pH 8 wastewater to achieve residual turbidity <1 NTU. NP removal from pH 6 solutions produced water with residual turbidity <2 NTU only at lower initial NP concentrations. For pH 8 solutions, ferric chloride produced treated water with residual turbidity <1 NTU but at higher doses than required for alum. While chitosan alone did not significantly reduce turbidity, the use of alum and chitosan together reduced the optimal alum dose by 10% and also reduced alum treatment acidification. Therefore, the use of chitosan in coagulation can potentially reduce chemical usage during water treatment and the energy and water consumption associated with chemical production. Use of alum with low chitosan concentrations produces faster settling floc, which can potentially reduce settling tank volume and produce an effluent containing lower aluminum concentrations.
