The Use of Closed-Circuit Television and Video in Suicide Prevention: Narrative Review and Future Directions

Abstract: Background Suicide is a recognized public health issue, with approximately 800,000 people dying by suicide each year. Among the different technologies used in suicide research, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and video have been used for a wide array of applications, including assessing crisis behaviors at metro stations, and using computer vision to identify a suicide attempt in progress. However, there has been no review of suicide research and interventions using CCTV and video. … Show more

“…The need for remote monitoring may also indicate the need for a more restrictive care setting. Given our mixed feedback, increasing use of remote monitoring generally, and use of CCTV and video in populationlevel automated detection systems for early intervention (e.g., at bridges to catch people before they jump) (33), we decided to retain this option and list raised concerns.…”

“…Studies [16], including from this group [12], have identified that the ability to prevent suicide is limited in current systems, mainly because an alert is only triggered when an attempt has taken place (e.g., when an individual has stepped onto railway tracks). The next step is to find ways to reach out to an individual prior to an attempt.…”

“…Grouping is a functionality to differentiate between a group of visitors and single visitor. A discovery from previous work [12] is that individuals in crisis are more likely to be alone rather than in a group. Therefore, visual analysis is used to classify whether a pedestrian belongs to a group of visitors or not.…”

“…Image super-resolution plays a vital role in the field of image and computer visionbased applications because the high quality or high-resolution (HR) images have more pixel density level and contains more detailed information. The detailed information is applied in various fields of computer vision and image processing tasks, such as image restoration [1], security surveillance [2], closed-circuit television surveillance [3], and security systems [4], object recognition [5], object detection [6], satellite imaging [7], remote sensing imagery [8][9][10], autonomous driverless car [11], medical imaging [12][13][14], and atmospheric monitoring [15].…”
